The Artist Labels of Château Mouton Rothschild

The Artist Labels of Château Mouton Rothschild

If you ask me to choose the most artistic wine label, I’d definitely vote for Château Mouton Rothschild. The wine estate has commissioned a contemporary artist to design the wine label every year since 1945. Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jeff Koons, Salvador Dali and Prince Charles from the UK are some of the great names who have designed the artist labels over the years. Many of them have stayed at the château for a period of time to get inspiration. All artworks since 1945 are displayed at the Labels Room in the château for exhibition

The first initiative of inviting a celebrated artist to design the wine label was in 1924, when Château Mouton Rothschild would like to celebrate its first estate bottling and invited the renowned poster artist Jean Carlu to design it. The winery’s idea of commissioning an acclaimed artist for each of its label was revived in 1945, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild would like to celebrate peace and victory after World War II. He invited Philippe Jullian to design the label with a Churchillian “V”. Since then, Château Mouton Rothschild has continued this tradition every year.

Winemaking is a piece of art. The wine that slowly matures in the wine bottle is another kind of art. The artists who created different design labels for Château Mouton Rothschild is also a form of art. Sipping a glass of wine with so many art forms makes me feel so artistic! It surely attracts me to collect all and add a touch of artistic color for my wine cellar.
